Destiny 2 Unvaulting: Returning Storylines, Raids and Menagerie Plans

Destiny 2’s unvaulting plan names returning storylines, raids and activities, with full content porting expected to take about 12 months.

Destiny 2 Unvaulting: Returning Storylines, Raids and Menagerie Plans

Destiny 2’s unvaulting plan could restore a substantial slice of the game’s history, from its original storylines to raids and seasonal activities. Bungie has outlined what it hopes to bring back and how the work will proceed: the project is in pre-production with a smaller team, and the full porting process is expected to take about 12 months once production begins.

What Bungie has named for a return

The first group includes the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris and Warmind storylines. Bungie also plans to restore the strikes, raids and raid lairs associated with those releases. For players who joined after this material left the game, the prospect is a chance to experience major parts of its past in the current client. For longtime players, it means familiar activities may once again sit alongside newer content.

The Menagerie is also on the confirmed list, with new rewards planned for its return. That detail suggests the work may include more than making an older activity accessible again: Bungie has identified rewards as an area for change. The update doesn’t specify what those rewards will be, so their design and how they fit into the activity remain open questions.

These named items form the clearest part of the plan, but Bungie has also described additions it hopes to deliver alongside the first pass or soon afterward. Those stretch goals include restoring lost free-roam locations, bringing back seasonal activities from seasons nine through 23, updating weapons from raids and raid lairs, and returning PvP maps. The wording leaves timing uncertain. Players can see the broad range of possibilities, but the update doesn’t promise that every item will arrive in the initial release.

More tentative additions

A further set of possibilities comes with more constraints. Bungie listed an updated New Light experience, seasonal story missions, the Kel’s Grave Gambit mode map and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter as hopeful additions. The studio said technical or strategic considerations could limit this work.

That distinction matters for players weighing what to expect. The storylines, associated activities and Menagerie are specifically identified as returning content. The other lists describe ambitions with less certainty, and the final shape could depend on what the team can support. The update gives no delivery dates for individual pieces, nor does it say which stretch goals might be prioritized. For now, the most useful measure of progress will be whether later updates attach clearer timing and scope to these groups.

A long porting effort, starting small

The work is currently in pre-production, being handled by a smaller team. Bungie described that staffing choice as deliberate: assigning too many resources at this stage, the studio said, could damage the project’s chances of success. Full production will follow when pre-production is complete. The porting work is then expected to take about 12 months.

That estimate sets expectations without giving a launch date. It applies to completing the porting process, and the update doesn’t provide a calendar point for the start of full production. The amount of content is part of the challenge: the plan spans storylines, strikes, raids, raid lairs, free-roam areas, PvP maps and seasonal material. Each category adds its own work to a project that Bungie says is still preparing to move into full production.

For players, the practical takeaway is that this is a long-term restoration effort, not a quick content drop. The confirmed list gives the project a clear center, while the stretch goals and hopeful additions show how much broader it could become. The gap between those groups will be important to watch as Bungie shares more detail.

February updates and the wider Destiny legacy

Bungie plans to share progress in February through high-level breakdowns of work on a Destiny 2 celebration “beyond a Monument of Triumph.” The studio also plans to discuss “Destiny Legacy,” a concept that refers to the original shooter and its stated desire to offer the “whole” experience. The update includes a tease of something further, but gives no specifics about what that might be. Bungie says it will share progress on unvaulting beyond those major February reports, so players should have opportunities to track the effort as it develops.

The update also recognizes that Bungie has lost player trust and has a steep climb ahead. That acknowledgment gives the project a second measure of success beyond the amount of content restored: whether the studio can communicate clearly and follow through over time. The post connects the resources available for this work to Marathon’s ability to evolve and become sustainable. Bungie says most of its team has roots in Destiny, and frames the future of Marathon as a way to support that legacy.

For now, the plan is promising in scope but still early in execution. The returning storylines and activities provide concrete targets; the timeline and less certain additions will need further detail. February’s updates should offer the first closer look at how the project is progressing and what Bungie means by bringing back the “whole” Destiny experience.
