FF14 Evercold: Yoshida Details Black Mage Changes, Reusable Bait and Poetics’ Replacement

Evercold will reshape Black Mage and fishing, add broad housing changes, and retire Poetics. Yoshida also shared updates on loot, rewards and customization.

FF14 Evercold: Yoshida Details Black Mage Changes, Reusable Bait and Poetics’ Replacement

Evercold’s biggest changes reach into the routines players have built around Final Fantasy 14: Black Mage will change how it uses key abilities, Fishers can stop carrying bait, and Poetics will disappear. Game director Naoki Yoshida discussed those plans and more during audience Q&As at Fanfest Tokyo, alongside Community Producer Toshio Murouchi. The answers offer an early look at how the expansion’s new progression systems could affect jobs, rewards and everyday play.

Players submitted questions after the event’s keynote, and Yoshida drew them from a box marked for normal, extreme and ultimate difficulty. One of the first answers concerned Zephyr, the new ranged physical damage job: its bird companion will support dual dyeing. Players will be able to bring dyes to a particular NPC and change the bird’s colors, adding another point of customization to a job that hasn’t yet arrived.

Black Mage and housing changes

Yoshida also offered a rare preview of Black Mage’s Evolved Mode. Triplecast, which currently grants three instant casts, will be replaced with a different ability. Leylines are changing as well. Rather than requiring Black Mages to stay inside them for 30 seconds, the new version will let players place the effect, leave to handle a mechanic and return to use a set number of abilities. That could make the job less punishing when a fight forces movement, while keeping Leylines central to its rhythm.

Yoshida stopped short of explaining the full design, joking that the combat system’s designer, Mr Prime, would be unhappy if he said more. A dedicated stream covering Evolved Mode for all jobs is expected before launch, so this Q&A is an initial glimpse rather than a complete guide to the changes.

Housing is also due for a quality-of-life upgrade after Evercold. Yoshida said players should be able to float almost every furnishing without relying on glitches or workarounds. Some lighting items may be exceptions, but his aim is to support floating across the housing catalogue. He also acknowledged requests for Island Sanctuary updates. The team wants to return to the feature after its work on the 8.0 expansion has eased.

Character customization is still receiving adjustments. Yoshida said the Evercold benchmark is planned for early December, with a livestream beforehand to show its new features. Another customization request, the ability to use weapon-out idle poses associated with other races or genders, is already being worked on.

Progression, rewards and raiding

Poetics will be removed, Yoshida said, in response to a question about Allagan Tomestones and the shift to a new weekly progression system. He didn’t name the replacement, but said players will have another way to obtain gear for alternate jobs and claim older rewards. More information is expected in a livestream focused on itemization and progression. The change matters because Poetics have long served as a familiar route to equipment; players will need to learn a new system for filling out their other jobs.

That replacement system will sit alongside a way to reclaim past rewards, including items from older seasons. Yoshida confirmed that this feature is in development, though he didn’t share a timetable or explain what rewards it will cover.

For savage raids, the move to personal loot won’t prevent players who have already cleared during the week from helping others. Yoshida said players who haven’t cleared that week will still receive loot. He pointed to a future progression stream for the complete rules.

He also shared a design detail about Dancing Mad Ultimate: the team built another phase, then cut it because the encounter was too difficult, too long and too rough. That decision suggests the final version reflects a deliberate limit on how much challenge and duration the fight should demand.

Weekly rewards will let players catch up on the previous week, but Yoshida ruled out earning the next week’s rewards early. His concern is that advance preparation could start to feel mandatory, particularly when players don’t know what the following week will require.

Fishing, PvP practice and the trailer

Fishing gets a particularly clear change in 8.0. Yoshida said there are no plans for a dedicated bait inventory because players won’t need to carry bait at all. Instead, bait that players unlock through leveling, quests or a one-time NPC purchase will join a selection list. Once added, it can be used repeatedly. It’s a practical fix for a job whose preparation currently includes managing another set of items.

Yoshida said practice versions of PvP maps are technically possible, but could use server capacity; he plans to discuss the idea with the server team. He didn’t confirm that the feature will arrive.

He gave two reasons the Warrior of Light appears as a Reaper in the Evercold trailer. The traditional character model has fewer jobs that fit its established look, he said, and some newer jobs suit it less naturally. Yoshida also hinted that a recent story exchange involving Halmarut and her comparison between the Warrior of Light and Zenos connects to the choice, but offered no further detail.

Character proportions remain a work in progress, too. Asked about sliders for the character’s rear, Yoshida said the team has plenty to test during Evercold development. The challenge is making gear behave consistently: a change that looks fine with one outfit might distort another or create a sharp shape when players switch glamours. His answer left the door open, while making clear that gear compatibility is a substantial part of the work.

What comes before launch

The Q&A also covered smaller personal and story questions. Yoshida hesitated over which Scion he would choose as a travel companion, weighing Tataru’s practical instincts against Estinien’s strength and the other characters’ quirks, before settling on Thancred. He said he mains Black Mage because he enjoys using powerful magic and sees the job as Final Fantasy’s iconic caster. Asked what he’d do if transported to Eorzea, he joked that he’d die, then imagined taking over a state and uniting people against Garlemald.

On date events with story characters, Yoshida wondered whether a written scenario would match each player’s idea of a date, and whether a character leaving the story could limit future options. He did not confirm that such a story event is planned.

Evercold enters early access on Friday, February 19, 2027, ahead of its full launch on Tuesday, February 23. Yoshida’s answers leave plenty for the upcoming streams to clarify, especially Black Mage’s redesigned abilities and the progression system replacing Poetics. Players can find a full Q&A transcript in the Final Fantasy 14 Discord’s translations and liveletters channel.
