Final Fantasy 14 Evercold Sets February 2027 Launch, Reveals Zephyr Job and Major Updates

Final Fantasy 14: Evercold will reshape the game’s activity and gear systems alongside its new story. At Fan Festival Tokyo, director Naoki Yoshida confirmed a February 2027 release, revealed the Zephyr ranged damage job, and outlined new raids, flexible weekly rewards and updates planned across patches 8.0 to 8.2.

Early access begins Friday, February 19, 2027, followed by the full launch on Tuesday, February 23. That’s later than the team’s original January target. Yoshida apologized for the shift, saying the extra time would help deliver on the promises made for the expansion. Pre-orders open Wednesday, November 4, and come with the Wind-Up Köttr minion and Halone’s Earring, which boosts experience.

The keynote’s clearest theme was flexibility: players will have more choice in how they tackle weekly activities, gear up different jobs, and enter group content. There’s also a notable change to Alliance Raids, with new high-difficulty encounters designed for eight players. Here are the main announcements and what they mean for the next chapter of the MMORPG.

A new job and five Realmships

Yoshida showed an extended version of the Evercold trailer, with more footage of Visna, the pink-haired Miqo’te introduced in a recent main story update. She appears in action as a Zephyr. The trailer also introduces Lagertha, a new character who resembles Ysale and serves as first mate aboard Naglfar, the Realmship of Water. Baldr, the red-haired Roegadyn associated with the other new job, Bastion, also received a name confirmation.

The Zephyr fights at range with a crossbow and a bird companion called a Nephele. The job’s roots lie in the northwestern mountains of Ilsabard, though players can begin learning it in Gridania. Like Bastion, it starts at level 90, ten levels below Evercold’s starting point, and uses Evolved Mode exclusively.

Yoshida described the Zephyr as a return to a dedicated pet job. The player and Nephele coordinate attacks, provide support to the party, and use evasive movement skills to find precise positions. The job’s mobility and companion attacks give it a distinct role among ranged physical damage dealers. A preview of Evolved Mode Bard at Fan Festival Anaheim offered an earlier hint at the direction, but the keynote showed the Zephyr itself in action.

Evercold’s five main zones are built around enormous ships known as Realmships. The keynote offered a closer look at Sessrymnir, the Realmship of Earth, where open fields give way to underground tunnels, mines and caverns filled with glimmering stone. Skiðblaðnir, the Realmship of Wind, has a more open feel and uses wind technology throughout its natural environments. It’s also home to the Köttr, a new race of small, catlike people, and to the engineers who build many of the Fourth’s ships.

The story’s brands add a social rule to life on the Realmships: people receive an elemental mark at birth, and those with different brands can’t safely approach one another. The main characters lack these marks, which could make the Warrior of Light and companions useful on the Fourth. Yoshida also revisited Hjartadunur, Evercold’s second town, a striking place with towering flowers and a huge central pit.

Both main towns will have jumping puzzles. Yoshida said the team heard that the Dawntrail versions were too easy and plans to raise the challenge. After the opening area, players can visit three zones in any order. Their levels will adapt to the player’s progression, and the three dungeons in those regions will scale to match as well.

More flexible activities and job progression

The revised Adventurer Activity screen will track a player’s activity level, which rises as they complete regular objectives. It includes repeatable standard missions and a separate set of weekly missions. Its background changes to reflect the player’s current area, and Yoshida said the team is considering options for customizing the room layout.

The weekly system aims to ease the pressure of daily checklists. Once players reach the weekly reward-point cap, they can claim rewards from the previous week that they missed. Yoshida also explained that “seasons” will describe two-patch cycles, such as 8.0 and 8.1. The term is a naming convention and does not add a fee.

Evolved Mode has now been implemented for every job, with balance testing underway. Players will be able to copy their highest item level to any job they’ve already brought to maximum level. Those tackling the hardest encounters will still have reason to build out their gear’s full set of secondary attributes.

Players can try new character creation options in the Evercold benchmark, which is planned for December. Eye color will use a contact lens system, allowing changes without returning to the full character creation process. Action skins will also let players customize animations, including teleporting and combat skills.

A quest guidance system is in development, though its arrival date remains uncertain. Auto-remounting, which lets players return to their mount after speaking with an NPC, is planned for patch 8.0. Mount speed will also become shared: owning the SDS Fenrir, Garland GL-IS or Hardy Daytona will grant the faster speed to all of a player’s mounts.

Raids, boss rushes and new gear paths

Alliance Raids will get a different structure. Yoshida said the familiar format, with groups of enemies between four major bosses, has made it hard to match rewards to the time required. New tiers will instead arrive in two parts, each containing two major battles and their lead-in encounters. The change applies to new additions for now, though it could reach older raids later.

Evercold will also introduce eight-player Savage Alliance Raids, beginning with the Evangelion crossover Ghosts of Desire. These will focus on high-difficulty boss encounters, with two unique battle stages and a challenge Yoshida compared to the third stage of a Savage Raid tier. The team is still deciding whether the encounters will be played individually or back to back.

Gauntlet of Power offers a shorter group activity: a four-player boss rush open to characters level 51 and above. Players don’t have to match their teammates’ levels, and everyone keeps access to the actions they’ve unlocked. Encounters adjust to account for the group’s different levels, making it easier to jump in without rebuilding a party around a shared level range.

A run can feature up to five bosses selected at random from a pool of more than 200. After each fight, the group decides whether to continue. The activity will only select bosses that every party member has already encountered, avoiding story spoilers. Players can enter with friends or use matchmaking from almost anywhere. Yoshida said bosses from future instanced dungeons will join the pool too.

Seasonal gear will tie progression to the Adventurer Activity system. As players raise their activity level, they’ll unlock categories for specific gear slots. Once they meet the requirements, they can collect the gear from a dedicated seasonal screen. The system is shared across jobs, so rewards won’t need to be claimed from different NPCs for each role.

The middle-difficulty raid tier has a name: Fierce. During even-numbered patches, players can upgrade one piece of seasonal gear per week through Fierce raids. In the following odd-numbered patch, that weekly limit disappears. Players can also earn one optimization per week from normal-difficulty trials, opening another gear improvement route for those who prefer a lower difficulty.

Savage Raids remain the source of high-end raid gear, but personal loot will make rewards more direct. Each participant is assured a trade-in item, which can be exchanged for a chosen piece through the new gear menu. Each floor is associated with specific gear slots, so completing a loadout will still require running all the floors.

Players will be able to edit the secondary attributes on Savage gear. The gear won’t come with Materia slots for guaranteed melding, but each raid tier will have two upgrade stages that unlock advanced melding options. Yoshida said their success rate will be much higher than for traditional crafted gear. The first upgrade uses the same items as the gear itself; the second requires Savage Alliance Raid tickets and crafted materials. Fully optimizing a set will add unique visual effects to its weapon.

Updates across the rest of the game

The expanded matchmaking test within regions is scheduled for North America and Europe on Tuesday, November 10, and China on Tuesday, December 1. Yoshida said the test in Japan is progressing well and thanked players for their feedback. Evercold job outfits will also let players hide selected details, such as Black Mage scarves, Gunbreaker cartridges and Viper collars.

Duty Support is being expanded to groups of different sizes. Players will be able to enter a dungeon with a mix of human teammates and NPCs, or use NPCs to fill a raid group instead of waiting for matchmaking. The Chocobo Companion update will let companions join players in dungeons and will rework breeding. Those changes are planned for patch 8.1.

PvP will receive adjustments in 8.0, including the addition of Bastion and Zephyr. A larger PvP update is planned for 8.1, alongside a new Hall of the Novice chapter intended to help newcomers learn competitive play.

Housing will gain interior size customization in patch 8.1. Players will be able to choose a small, medium or large interior layout regardless of the property’s exterior size, at a cost in Gil. A housing interface overhaul is planned for 8.2 and will support placing furnishings in midair without relying on workarounds.

More housing plots are also in development, though Yoshida gave no timeframe. He said the team has approved the budget and is discussing how best to add them. That leaves the details unresolved, but the stated plan is to expand access to player housing.

The first tier of the Final Fantasy 7 raid, Beyond the Lifestream, is called Fated Collision. Its normal difficulty is planned for patch 8.01, giving players time with Evercold’s main story after launch. Savage arrives in 8.05, followed by Fierce one week later. Yoshida said the spacing should keep Fierce from feeling like a requirement for Savage, whether players are preparing through fight practice or gear.

The Evangelion Alliance Raid, Ghosts of Desire, begins in patch 8.1 on the usual schedule. Yoshida also showed new artwork for Beyond the Lifestream, which prominently features Sephiroth. More details are expected in upcoming live letters, including a full look at Evolved Mode across every job and further previews of 8.0’s content.

Evercold’s headline appeal is a new story and job, but its broader changes could have the longer reach: activity rewards can be claimed more flexibly, gear progression connects several difficulty levels, and new group modes offer shorter or tougher ways to play. Early access starts February 19, 2027, with the full release following on February 23.
