Soulframe Open Preludes Opens to All PC Players on November 6
Digital Extremes opens Soulframe to all PC players on November 6, with Update 17 bringing corruption zones, a stealth focused Pact and wolf mounts.

Soulframe’s next test is a major change in who can play and how the world works. Digital Extremes is removing the invite requirement for Open Preludes on PC, while Update 17, Verse of the Veilands, reshapes the map around spreading corruption, regional objectives and new ways to fight and travel.

Open Preludes begins Friday, November 6. Anyone can access the game through its own PC client, downloaded from the Soulframe website; the access change does not include other platforms. The move ends the limited invite access that has defined the game’s Preludes phase since it began in 2023. Previously, new players entered Alca in limited waves, including around TennoCon.
For a game that has spent years appearing in brief glimpses, the broader test gives players a chance to see how its systems fit together. Creative Director Geoff Crookes compared the current work to the early days of Warframe development, saying, “This week [week commencing October 26] felt like early Warframe dev.” Design Director Scott McGregor added, “We’re breaking a lot of bones again.” The comments suggest a team still willing to revise core parts of the experience as more players come in.
Corruption gives Alca a changing structure
Update 17 is built around a substantial rework of Midrath and the spread of Ode’n corruption. Ode Syphons will appear across the map, draining energy from Alca. Players can take on Votives, a set of quests and objectives, to earn each region’s unique song and use it to cleanse the affected area.
That structure gives exploration a clearer direction. Rather than simply heading into the open world and deciding what to do next, players will have regional goals tied to the Syphons and the process of restoring the land. The world’s state also affects what happens within it: resources will change as corruption spreads, local wildlife will retreat, some events will only become available after a Syphon is overturned, and loot tables will vary with each region’s condition.

The shift also changes Alca’s mood. Crookes said the first impression may feel “a bit bleak,” while the contrast between corrupted and healed zones is part of the intended effect. He and McGregor were concerned about altering a world players have praised for its comfort and beauty. Crookes described the corrupted areas as “much more unforgiving and harsh” at first glance. The design asks players to notice the difference between a region under pressure and one they’ve helped restore, making recovery visible through both the environment and the activities available there.

A new Pact brings traps and crowd control
Verse of the Veilands also adds Ode Strike, a new Pact, or character class, focused on stealth, traps and deception. Its current abilities include a spinning bola, an area attack that sends spikes across the ground, and Ode balloons that hold enemies under long lasting crowd control before spirits carry them away mid-fight. A new dagger is part of the weapon selection for the Pact, alongside additional weapons and armor.
The abilities point toward a style built around controlling encounters and creating openings, rather than meeting every enemy with direct attacks. That could give players another way to approach combat as the new regional objectives bring them into fights across Midrath. The details shared so far cover the Pact’s broad focus and several abilities, while leaving room for players to learn how the kit feels in practice once the update arrives.
Wolf mounts arrive with the update
After Digital Extremes showed mounts at TennoCon and said they were planned for the fall, Update 17 will let players ride their wolf pup. The mount is a reward for training the animal, so it builds on an existing relationship with the creature instead of appearing as a separate travel feature. McGregor praised the mount animations and said the wolves remain “puppies” at heart.
That detail could help the new travel option feel connected to Soulframe’s world and its wildlife. The team also mentioned new “angry fish,” though it shared few specifics about them. They’re a smaller tease amid the larger changes, but another sign that the update is adding new creatures as well as combat and traversal features.

The seasonal Halloween update, Bita’s Eve, is returning too, with a mask, talisman and sickle. The mask has a striking, unsettling look, adding a more eerie note to a game otherwise known for the beauty of Alca’s landscapes.
Update 17 is due in November, bringing the new Pact, wolf mounts and revised map systems. Open Preludes itself starts on November 6 for PC players, who will need to download the client from Soulframe’s site rather than Steam. The access expansion and the update are related steps, but they have distinct timing: players can enter the test first, while the new systems arrive later in November.
Soulframe has been gradually taking shape through limited access and public glimpses, and this version appears to make its world more active and reactive. Corruption now affects resources, wildlife, events and rewards, while the new Pact and mounts expand how players can handle the dangers they encounter. For returning players, the biggest adjustment may be seeing familiar places in a harsher state; for newcomers, Open Preludes offers a first chance to explore Alca and help change it.
